On 20 March 2018, San Francisco supervisors voted unanimously to ban the sale of fur, becoming the largest US city to do so. The ban comes into force on 1 January 2019, and includes any apparel or accessories which contain fur including coats and key chains. Retailers will be allowed to sell their current inventory until 1 January 2020.
San Francisco has become known for its love of animals, having previously passed laws prohibiting performances by exotic animals and forbidding the sale of non-rescue cats and dogs from pet stores. However, small retailers are concerned about how the ban on fur will affect their ability to make a living, with some stating that it should have been put to a citywide vote.
