A US population survey done in 2017 suggests that poetry reading in the country has increased by 5% from figures recorded in 2012. This is the first time in the last 20 years that the trend has seen a rise, and has been particularly observed amongst 18-24-year-olds. It has been suggested that this is due to the popularity of Instagram poetry, and to particular authors of the site who went on to publish poetry collections.
If the use of a social media website has in fact contributed to population-wide reading behaviour as suggested, then it’s worth noting the potential use and impact of the likes of Instagram on people’s choices.
